As a Trail Maintainer (called Steward or Adopter by some clubs) you assume responsibility for a section of the Finger Lakes Trail, generally 1 or 2 miles in length. Working for a club or trail sponsoring organization, or with an individual trail sponsor under one of the FLTC’s volunteer Regional Trail Coordinators, you agree to visit your section three times per year.
Trail Maintainer duties include:
- Removing branches and debris from the trail
- Brushing (cutting) back leafy vegetation
- Cutting grass and weeds on the trail
- Picking up litter
- Refreshing blazing
- Cleaning water drainage
- Requesting the Regional Trail Coordinator (RTC) to obtain sawyer assistance when needed
- Assessing other trail issues/opportunities and reporting to the RTC as necessary
- Keeping track of volunteer hours to be reported during the annual volunteer census
To access the services of a roving Certified Sawyer (chainsaw operator) or for anything else you can’t handle yourself, you will contact the Regional Trail Coordinator who oversees your area. They can help you or organize a work day with a local work crew. Training will be provided on tools and techniques. Tools can be borrowed from the Finger Lakes Trail Conference (FLTC). Additional on-trail assistance/training will occur until you are comfortable with the tasks. The Roving Trail Crew and others are available upon request to help with more significant work. You will keep a log of your activities and report total hours of trail work, drive time, and administrative work, and report it to your trails chairperson or sponsor. You will also be invited to attend occasional training meetings in your region.
In addition to fresh air and knowing that you are helping the FLTC, an added benefit is that trail sponsors are offered a discounted membership in the FLTC.
