Location: Remote (preference given for candidates near the Finger Lakes Trail corridor in Upstate NY)

Employment Period: Seasonal; April – October

Wages: $23.40/hour @ 40 hours/week

The Finger Lakes Trail Conference, Inc. (FLTC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a mission“… to build, protect, enhance, and promote a continuous footpath across New York State for the enjoyment and health of residents and visitors. Forever!” Founded in 1962, The FLTC works in cooperation with its more than 1,400 members and various organizations to develop and maintain a premier hiking trail system in New York.

Position Overview

The FLTC is seeking a seasonal trail leader to work with volunteers to plan and execute workdays and training workshops. This position will be responsible for leading by example, ensuring safety in the field, and helping to provide a meaningful and productive volunteer experience. This role will play an important part in ensuring trail workdays are safe and adhere to sustainable trail standards.

Requirements:

  • Must have valid driver’s license
  • Must have reliable vehicle
  • Must be comfortable hiking 5+ miles in a day on uneven, changing terrain
  • Must be able to have access to internet to participate in organizational meetings and other special staff initiatives
  • Evening and weekend work will be required
  • Has to be self-starter and be able to work independently

Logistics:

  • This position will require frequent travel across the trail system
  • There may be times when camping is necessary
  • When not in the field, work will be remote
  • Season will begin in early April and run through October – begin and end dates have some flexibility depending on the candidate

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with volunteer leaders across the trail system to plan and execute work projects.
  • Monitor and track project budgets.
  • Provide guidance and training to volunteers regarding trail design and construction and Leave No Trace Principles while in the field.
  • Work with college, youth, and community groups interested in volunteering along the trail.
  • Update Field and Safety Guide

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum one year of relevant professional experience or extensive volunteer experience
  • First Aid and CPR (or willing to acquire before start of season)
  • Thorough understanding of Leave No Trace Principles
  • Ability to lead and mentor volunteers of all ages and abilities
  • The ability to perform physically demanding trail work
  • Excellent written, electronic, and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player
  • Good interpersonal and relationship-building skills
  • Demonstrates initiative and ability to problem solve in the field
  • Understanding of safe hand and power tool use

Preferred Qualifications

  • One season of Crew Leader Experience and/or proven experience in working with community and agency partners and volunteers
  • Wilderness First Aid
  • Game of Logging or equivalent certification
