2021 County Hike Series – Cortland County
Our popular County Hike Series is BACK in 2021!
Each year, the FLT offers a Cross-County Hike, which can eventually lead hikers all the way across the state to complete an End-to-End of the FLT.
The Series will kick off on June 19, with subsequent hikes on July 17, August 7, August 21, September 11, and September 18. The longest hike in the series is approximately 11.7 miles and the shortest is approximately 9.3 miles. Participants will receive an email each month with details about the hike(s).
We are offering TWO options for participation in 2021. You may register for the Group Series, taking advantage of bus service from the end to the starting point of each hike, and enjoying the SAG (Supply and Gear) Wagon with snacks and refreshments along the way; or you may choose to complete the hikes on your own with the Independent Series. We’ll send all participants the hike plots each month, but if you choose the Independent Series you may complete the hikes at any time and still earn your Cortland County Cross County Hike Series patch.
Hikers in the Group Series are split into groups based on how fast or slow they move, and each group is led by an experienced leader. Buses pick up participants at the end point in the morning and drive them to the starting point. Near the middle of the hike, a SAG (Supply and Gear) wagon is set up so hikers can refresh themselves with drinks and snacks. Hikers may choose to stop for the day at the SAG Wagon, completing a “half-hike,” and making arrangements with other half-hikers to complete the other half on another day, or to complete it on their own.
The Cross County Hike Series is one of the FLT’s most popular hiking events, and there truly is an option for everyone! We are thrilled to be able to offer it once again this year, and we’re excited for our travels across Cortland County. We’ll be honoring some of the founders and early leaders of the Finger Lakes Trail Conference with Named Hikes throughout the Series, and we look forward to sharing that history with you.
