2018 Alley Cat Projects

Alley Cat Crews work on major trail construction projects. These projects may require months of advanced planning and preparation and the projects themselves may take from several days to a week. They involve construction of trail infrastructure such as lean-tos and bridges, and major trail building or rerouting. Crews are organized by the FLTC’s Director of Crews & Construction. Projects are done with assistance and local coordination provided by the Trail Sponsoring organization or individual.

Although Alley Cat is named from “Allegany to the Catskills,” Alley Cat crews work on branch trails, too.

2018 Alley Cat Schedule:

In December an anonymous donation was made to the FLTC for another lean-to that will be built in Basswood State Forest (Map 25) northeast of Bainbridge, NY. This is exciting news as we work to continue the master plan to have a lean-to every 10-15 miles along the trail. Roy Dando has taken the role of Project Manager and Rick Roberts that of Construction Manager and is joined by an ambitious team made up of Chris Rounds, Larry Blumberg and Don Sutherland. The team was busy on the weekend of January 27 scouting sites in Basswood and Wiley Brook State forests and is working with the DEC to confirm the site selection within Basswood State Forest. Work on the lean-to will begin May 18-20th. Volunteers are asked to contact Roy via email at [email protected] to volunteer for the project.

As I begin my first year in confirming crews, food, camping arrangements and all the fine details that are needed to make an Alley-Cat successful, I have been able to confirm the following project and/or construction managers for our other projects this year

Darien Lake State Park Lean-to (CT8)

Dave Potzler has confirmed as the project manager, that the build date of the lean-to will be the weekend of May 11-13^th. Volunteers are to contact Dave via email at [email protected]

South Bradford State Forest Trail Improvement Project (M13)

The dates for the Bradford State Forest Alley-Cat have not been set yet, but Bill Meehan is planning for this project to be completed over several weekends. The work will involve building a series of switchbacks along the east side of Dennis Road and clearing trail along the switchbacks east of Corbett Hollow Road. Durfee Hill Road Trail Improvement Project (M17)

The dates for the Durfee Hill Road Alley-Cat have also not been set. The Project Manager is Roger Hopkins assisted by Lucy Gagliardo and Max Heitner. Construction Manager Matt Brenneman has confirmed that the work will be done over several weekends. Landowner permissions for the project have been secured that will make it possible for the trail to avoid the steep climb up Heisey Road. Volunteers should contact Matt at [email protected]

Robinson State Forest “Kimmee” Lean-To (M18)

The Project Manager is Roger Hopkins assisted by Lucy Gagliardo and Max Heitner. Mike Ogden has volunteered to be the Construction Manager for the Kimmee lean-to. This project was in jeopardy of being delayed to 2019 but will go on as planned. The existing lean-to will be taken down by the Cayuga Trail Club as the site is wet and not suitable for a rebuild at that location. The construction date has not been set at this time, but volunteers are asked to contact Mike at [email protected]

South Bradford State Forest Trail Improvement Project – Map 13 – Switchbacks and trail improvement are the main focus of this alley cat that will primarily focus on the section of trail between Dennis and Corbett Hollow Road. Durfee Hill Road Trail Improvement Project – Map 17 – Switchbacks and trail clearing are the main focus of this project. The project will also take place over several weekends during the summer. Volunteers can contact Matt Branneman at[email protected]

Robinson State Forest “Kimmee” Lean-to – Map 18 – Lean-to construction will take place during the weekend of August 3rd to 6th. The original lean-to will be deconstructed by members of the Cayuga Trail Club outside of the dates of the lean-to construction. Volunteers can contact Mike Ogden at [email protected]

Bassword State Forest Lean-to – Map 25 – Lean-to construction will take place during the weekend of May 18th-20th. Volunteers can contact Roy Dando at [email protected]

Robinson State Forest “Kimmee” Lean-to (M18) – Aug 3-6 — If you need lodging, please contact Mike Ogden [email protected] or Lucy Gagliardo at [email protected]

Durfee Hill Road Trail Reroute and Improvement Project (M17) — The project is scheduled for two weekends: Aug 25-26 and Sep 8-9. The purpose is to build about 1 mile of new trail and restore about 1/2 mile of old FLT trail that has been closed for four years due to loss of adjacent landowner permission. This will replace what has long been a steep and unpleasant roadwalk. The result will be well-protected trail offering high quality hiking and connecting nearly 20 miles of continuous off-road travel.

The AlleyCat crew will be working on building switchbacks, side hill benching, trail brushing and clearing, and blazing. There will also be some carpentry work on a fairly challenging staircase. To volunteer for the project, please contact Matt Branneman at [email protected].

Saturday and Sunday lunch and Saturday dinner will be provided for both weekends. Saturday night lodging for non-commuters will be provided by local FLTC and CTC members.
