The annual FLTC Fall Campout is three days of hikes and two evening programs, usually in a more rustic setting.

2016 Fall Campout

September 30 to October 2, 2016

2016 Event Report

2016 Event Report

The just-concluded 2016 Fall Finger Lakes Trail Campout weekend was held at the General Clinton Park in Bainbridge, NY, on the shores of the Susquehanna River.  It was hosted by the Binghamton-based Triple Cities Hiking Club (TCHC).

Attendees numbered around 100 and were given their choice to participate in any of the 21 different hikes (and one bike ride) offered during the three day weekend event.  The hikes pretty much covered FLT maps M24 (Bowman Lake State Park) all the way to map M31 (Little Pond Campground in the Catskill Mountains), with daily mileages varying from 4 to almost 11.

Friday evening we were treated to a very entertaining and spirited trivia contest.  We divided into nine teams to vie for weekend “bragging rights” along with some “trivial” prizes like candy bars, planted mums, official TCHC koozies, and miniature pumpkins.

Saturday night Jerry Carlson, the NY DEC’s leading research scientist on invasive species, spoke to the group to tell us the latest in the fight against the several different invasive species which are currently threatening NY’s forest lands.

For a basically rainy weekend, we did “luck out” some, with our being able to get in the Saturday and Sunday hikes in rain-free conditions…however, we won’t talk about Friday’s hikes or what it was like to camp out on Friday and Saturday nights !

On behalf of the TCHC, I’d like to thank everyone who participated in this event, with Finger Lakes Trail members coming from all across the state and many of them representing clubs like the Foothills Trail Club, Cayuga Trails Club, ADK-Onondaga, Bullthistle Club, and of course the Triple Cities Hiking Club.

A photo album has been started and posted to the TCHC website, here’s the direct link to the album:

More pics will be added, we had a number of photographers out there this weekend…if you have photos to add and need help, please let me know, I’ll send you instructions (they are posted to the TCHC’s Google-Photos account).

Again, our thanks to all who participated !

Thanks,
Larry Blumberg

Received from Saturday evening presentation speaker Jerry Carlson, NY DEC Research Scientist+

Hi Larry and thank you, it was interesting and a great group of folks, with interest, dedication, spirit and understanding.  I hope there was and will be a feeling of continued collaboration between FLT and DEC-Forest Health.

Our contact sites are on the website  WWW.DEC.NY.GOV/LANDS  the best way to find us directly is to put forest health in the search box or copy this URL http://www.dec.ny.gov/lands/4969.html

We have a general email to receive requests regarding insects, disease and any damage that requires interpretation etc. the email is   [email protected]  and it is best to put the type of tree or problem in the subject line  as this helps us priority list our responses.

We also have 2 hotlines, one plants and the other forest damage in general.  Staff will receive calls from people who think they have one of our target invasive problems like giant hogweed, kudzu, mile-a-minute vine, oakwilt, the Asian longhorn beetle, southern pine beetle etc.

1-866-640-0652  for general forest health

1-845-256-3111 for giant hogweed and invasive plants

They can try to call me directly at 518-402-9419 or 9425.
