North Country National Scenic Trail Day

Join hikers from across the region as we celebrate the first annual North Country National Scenic Trail Day, Saturday, September 27, 2014.  ​This event is to help raise the profile and awareness of the NCNST as a trail of national significance and a valuable recreational resource to local communities.

Two NCNST hikes are being sponsored by the FLTC, along sections where the FLT and NCNST run concurrently.

Little Rock City, FLT Map M3 (Cattaraugus County)

Hike Description:  This 9.6 mile long hike starts at the base of the Holimont Ski Resort and heads west thru Little Rock City, ending at Stone Chimney Rd.  Parts are very hilly.

Meeting Time: 9 am

Meeting Location:  Stone Chimney Rd, just north of Salamanca, NY on NY Rte 353, at the roundabout.  We’ll carpool from there over to Holimont Ski Resort to start our hike.

Highland Forest, FLT Map O2​ (Onondaga County)

Hike Description:​  This 5 mile hike will traverse the portion of the North Country National Scenic Trail which lies within Highland Forest, an Onondaga County Park.  The hike will start on the west side of Highland Forest and climb the gentle forested hills before dropping down to DeRuyter Lake on the east side.  Expect some spectacular autumn vistas !

Meeting Time: 10 am

Meeting Location: Skyline Visitor Center at Highland Forest​.  Please note – there is a $3 admission fee to the park, payable at the Visitor Center.  Highland Forest is on NY Rte 80 in Fabius, NY.  Take the I-81 Tully exit and head east on NY Rte 80 to the park.
